Messi banned, fined for red card

Lionel Messi has been banned for one match for a red card he got against Chile in the Copa America third-place playoff.

The Barcelona striker is also fined $1,500 after levelling accusations of “corruption” at South American football chiefs.

Messi's Argentina suffered a semi final defeat to hosts Brazil in a game he was sent off after clashing with Gary Medel.

After the match, Messi alleged that the tournament had been fixed in favour of the eventual winners Brazil, calling the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) “corrupt” and refusing to attend the ceremony to pick up his medal, Firstpost report.
