Former Asante Kotoko coach C.K Akonnor says he was caught unawares by the club’s decision to ‘promote’ him to Technical Director.
Asante handed Akonnor the TD role while turning to appoint Kjetil Zachariassen to coach the Ghanaian giants. The former Black Stars international took the side to the CAF Confederation Cup as well as winning the Tier 1 of the Special Competition.
“It was shocking when I heard the news, I was as shocked as you were,” Akonnor told journalists at the Ghana Football Awards where he won the Coach of the Year.
“But it has already happened and I can’t undo it. What I can say is that I am grateful that I was given that platform to exhibit my coaching talents. Whatever happens is good, look if I hadn’t gone to Ashgold no one would have believed that I was good then I left to Kotoko when the opportunity came.”
Akonnor then went on to confirm that he rejected the club’s offer and his representatives are handling what is now a legal battle with Kotoko.
“I declined that offer from Kotoko because I believe that I am a coach and that should be the way. For now, my lawyers have written to them and I am sure they will respond. Now it is not in my hands anymore because I am not an expert in law. What I know is that I don’t want to leave Kotoko acrimoniously so I hope this is resolved amicably,” concluded Akonnor.
