Everton is coming close to making Mainz midfielder Jean-Philippe Gbamin their direct replacement for Idrissa Gueye, who signed for Paris Saint-Germain on Tuesday.
According to Sky Deutschland, the Toffees are on the verge of landing the 23-year-old on a five-year contract which will cost them around £27.5m after an earlier bed was allegedly rejected.
Bild has reported that the two sides have yet to agree to a fee, with the Bundesliga side looking for more guaranteed money upfront, shunning the proposal from Everton of performance-related bonuses.
Mainz and Everton were involved in negotiations during the weekend as the two sides faced off in the Opel Cup in Mainz last Saturday. Gbamin nade 33 appearances for Mainz last season, scoring twice and featuring in a side that finished 12th in the Bundesliga.
The Ivorian made 95 appearances since arriving from French side Lens three years ago and did not feature in last Saturday’s Opel Cup clash.
Gbamin featured at AFCON 2019 for Ivory Coast, starting in their round of 16 win over Mali and appearing off the bench in their quarterfinal defeat to eventual champions Algeria.
