Five years after being linked with Manchester United, Toni Kroos has finally revealed that David Moyes' sacking scuppered the deal.
The German established himself as one of the world's best midfielders during his time with Bayern Munich, winning three Bundesliga titles during his spell with the Bavarians. Kroos was linked with Manchester United after winning the 2014 World Cup before eventually joining Real Madrid.
Speaking to GQ Gentlemen's Quarterly, Kroos revealed that he had agreed on a deal to join United, "I knew before that Manchester wanted me. And Moyes underlined that absolutely. It was a really nice afternoon with very nice people. We talked a lot about United's footballing plan which convinced me. In the end, we agreed to do it. We agreed verbally."
Moyes was sacked following a string of poor results, which meant that the deal was off, "I am not somebody who worries about contingencies. Yes, it was close. I almost went to Manchester United. But it did not happen that way."
