Tottenham broke their transfer record to bring in the much-coveted French midfielder Tanguy Ndombele from Lyon for €60m.
What does he bring to the party? Let's take a closer look.
Player bio 📊
- Age: 22
- Club: Tottenham Hotspur
- Position: Box-to-box midfielder
- Estimated transfer value: €65m
What's Ndombele's story so far? 🇫🇷
Ndombele was born in France to parents of D.R. Congolese descent in December 1996.
On 31 August 2017, Ndombele moved to Lyon on a one-year loan and he made his competitive debut for the club against Paris Saint-Germain in September 2017. The following year was a breakout year for him where he earned rave reviews in Ligue 1 for his all-action, box-to-box style.
2019/2020 should be an intriguing season in the Premier League and we expect Nodmbele to excel in the fast-paced environment of England.
Playing style & strengths 🥊
Ndombele is a compact midfield player with a brilliant first touch, great balance and the ability to dribble through markers. He's got a superb range of passing and has the capability to pull off killer through balls and create chances for teammates.
As evidenced by his debut, he is capable of scoring goals from range. Ndombele has been billed as a defensive midfielder but it seems that he is so much more than that. He's a technical, mobile, box-to-box player that immediately improves Tottenham's central options. Ndombele and fellow new signing Giovani Lo Celso should form a dynamic duo in the engine room for Pochettino's men.
Weaknesses & what's next ☄️
There are not many weaknesses in the midfielder's game, but he will have to improve on his tackling as the Premier League requires that all midfielders put in a defensive shift because of its high-pace nature. He will also have to learn to cut out momentary lapses in concentration as those might end up costing him in big games.
Speaking of big games, Ndombele and Tottenham travel to champions Manchester City this Saturday and that will be an opportunity for Ndombele to test his mettle against the best. His direct battle with Manchester City's own new signing, Rodri, should be a fascinating one.
