Chelsea slow start to the season continued after being held to a 1-1 draw by Leicester on Sunday 18 August at Stamford Bridge.
After losing two games in a span of a week, it was time. Frank Lampard and his charges got things running and their intention was from the onset with Pedro slamming a volley into the side net just with 48 seconds gone.
After pinning Leicester in their own half, the hosts deservedly took a seventh-minute lead through Mason Mount. Wilfred Ndidi dithered for an age on the edge of the D and was robbed by Mount, who moved into the area and screwed an excellent low shot past Schmeichel.
Chelsea dominance was reflected in the stats with the hosts having had 60 passes in the opposition half to Leicester’s six. Despite the slow start, Leicester was growing in the game and Ricardo was to overhit his through pass to Vardy with the England striker having been in a position to trouble the opposition defence.
Leicester started the second half brightly and was to get a half a chance in the 50th minute. Maddison ran at the Chelsea defence, just outside the area with Kante getting a tackle in but Maddison picked up the loose ball, danced around the outrushing Kepa and slid the ball back from the byline towards Tielemans near the penalty spot but Mount nipped in front of him to make an important clearance.
The pressure by Leicester was to pay in the 67th minute through Wilfred Ndidi. After making a mistake that led to Chelsea’s goal he was to equalize with an empathic header from Maddison’s out-swinging corner.
Jamie Vardy almost made it 2-1 in the 78th minute. Maddison put him through on the left of the area with a lovely disguised pass. Vardy took a touch and then hammered the ball low across goal with his left foot. Kepa plunged to his left and the ball whistled just wide of the far post.
Maddison was to score in added minutes but he was already flagged offside as Chelsea escaped with a point.
