Xabi Alonso set to make managerial debut on Saturday

Former Liverpool and Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso will make his managerial debut on Saturday when he leads the Real Sociedad B against Burgos in Segunda Division B, the third tier of Spanish football.

The world cup winner, who came through Real Sociedad youth team before moving to Liverpool was appointed on a two-year deal in June and will lead the side in their first competitive match.

Alonso made 124 appearances for Real Sociedad between July 2001 to August 2004 scoring 10 goals, which earned him a move to the Reds the following season.

Speaking to BBC, the midfielder expressed his gratitude in securing the chance and promised to nurture the young talents.

"It was always on my mind to come back. I didn't know if it would be as a player or as a coach but I wanted to come back to San Sebastian to live and be part of the club. The club is doing a great job with the youth teams and really support the young players to become professionals and to feed the first team with the players, to develop, to improve them to be ready for the first team.

"To be part of that process was a big challenge, a big part of the formation as a coach and so many players are reaching the first team because they're doing a great job with the young teams."

He was non-committal though on whether or not he will one day be keen on managing the side, opting to say they currently have a 'good coach'.

Alonso had a highly decorated career, winning titles in England, Spain, Bayern and with the national team. R
