Kaizer Chiefs coach Ernst Middendorp and SuperSport United striker Bradley Grobler are award winners. The duo has been named the Absa Premiership’s best coach and player for August 2019.
Middendorp was unsurprisingly the best coach in the country.
What did he do?
The 60-year-old coach led Chiefs to three wins in four. Middendorp, whose team sits atop the Premier League, enjoyed wins over Highlands Park away (2-3), Black Leopards at home (1-0), Cape Town City (1-2) on the road - while drawing with SuperSport in Soweto (1-1).
"I want to thank everyone at Kaizer Chiefs for having the belief. I appreciate this award but it doesn't mean we will live on cloud nine forever," Middendorp told the media at today’s event.
With the best coach award comes the best player of the month.
August belonged to Matsatsantsa a Pitori striker Grobler. The man spent the better part of last season in the injury room, but has now quickly done enough to also return to Bafana Bafana.
Grobler’s five games in August, which included an MTN8 game, saw the 31-year-old Joburger deliver five goals and one assist.
"It's a special feeling to be honoured as the Absa Premiership Player of the Month. This is the recognition of the work that we have put as a team at SuperSport,” Grobler reacted.
Meanwhile, the football must go on. Chiefs will welcome Polokwane City to Soccer City, while SuperSport host Cape Town City. Both games are set for Saturday evening at 18:00 and 20:00 respectively.
Can Middendorp lead Amakhosi to the Absa Premiership title in May? And Grobler to take the top goalscorer gong? Let us watch on.
