Gor Mahia put their off-field woes to one side as they managed to register a 2-1 win over KCB FC in a Kenyan Premier League clash staged at Kenyatta Stadium-Machakos on Sunday 22 September.
The match started on a balanced affair with KCB at one point through Enock Agwanda long throw causing serious discontent to the Gor Mahia defence.
Gor Mahia was, however, to take the lead in the 12th minute through Francis Afiriye after some laxity in the KCB defence. A consistent pressing from Wellington Ochieng on the right-wing saw the defender block and an intended clearing from a KCB defender, the loose ball fell to the hovering Afiriye who made no mistake from twelve yards.
Lawrence Juma was to double Gor Mahia's lead in the 33rd minute with a sumptuous stinger. Kenneth Muguna had floated in a corner that was halfway cleared by the KCB defence, Juma at the edge of the box was to capitalize on the uncleared scramble to send in a first time shot that beat the KCB keeper.
Despite the setbacks, KCB was not relenting in their bid to rescue the game and they deservingly won a penalty in the 33rd minute when Wellington Ochieng brought down Stephen Waruru in his own box. Up stepped Agwanda to reduce the arrears.
Gor thought they had added a third in the 48th minute when Samuel Onyango found the back of the net but the second assistant referee flag was already up for an offside call with replays showing otherwise.
Late pressure was to ensure from Gor Mahia with Zedekiah Otieno, coming up against his former side for the first time since leaving two months ago, urge to have his side rescue a point proving pointless.
