Kenya U20 head coach Stanley Okumbi is expecting a tough test against Ethiopia in their third group game of the 2019 CECAFA U20 Championship on Thursday.
Okumbi has so far registered one win and one draw against Zanzibar and Tanzania respectively and according to the tactician, there were no easy games in the competition.
“It’s a tough tournament and I can’t say Zanzibar is an easy team because we scored five goals against them. They played a good game against Ethiopia yesterday and their quality showed. For Tanzania, many said it was a derby, something I didn’t know, but it was a good game altogether. They did watch our game against Zanzibar and they knew what to expect from us so they were well prepared.
“I have watched Ethiopia in two games. They wasted a lot of chances in their game against Zanzibar. They want to qualify and they have only one chance to stay in the tournament and it will be against us so it means that it will be a tough match but we are prepared for them,” Okumbi said.
The former Harambee Stars head coach further urged the CECAFA body to put more emphasis on youth development by organizing a lot of the youthful tournaments in the future.
“We just need many of the youth tournaments. Youth programmes are the future of the national teams in the region and if this is done regularly, we will have a pool of talents to choose from in the region for our national teams,” Okumbi added.
The Kenyan side has technically qualified to the next round and will hope for a kind opponent in the knockout phase.
