πŸ‡ΏπŸ‡¦βœŒπŸΎπŸ‘΄πŸΎ A Mzansi football icon turns 75! Do you know everything about Kaizer Motaung?

Kaizer Motaung requires no introduction as one South Africa’s most influential football godfathers.

The man known as “Chincha Guluva” or “Bra Kaizer” counts his 75th birthday today on 16 October 2019. This is the perfect moment to draw the icon’s origins, playing career and the creation of the mighty Kaizer Chiefs Football Club.

The Dawn 👶🏻

Long before he would be dubbed his famous nicknames, Kaizer was born on 16 October 1944 in Soweto’s Orlando East. Around his 16th birthday, he became an Orlando Pirates footballer... but nobody could conceive the idea of him later forming Pirates' bitter rival club.

Kaizer later moved abroad. He jetted as far as North America to play his football for Atlanta Chiefs between 1968 and 1971. Motoung also played for Denver Dynamos (1974-75) - before suddenly heading back to Mzansi with a life-defining idea…

I'm calling it Kaizer Chiefs 🗣

Though Kaizer was still in the States in the early 70s, the 7th of January 1970 is officially recognized as the day he formed Chiefs in Soweto. The famous gold & black club struck a very quick following in Soweto that rivaled the older Orlando Pirates which had been formed in 1937. Today, Chiefs, known as Amakhosi, are believed to be Sub-Saharan Africa’s most supported club with a rough estimate of 16 million followers.

“Like many kids in the townships, he started playing football from a young age. He was a star player in high school and caught the eyes of scouts. At age sixteen, he was recruited to join Orlando Pirates juniors. He didn’t play long for the juniors as he was promoted to the senior team,” Chiefs wrote on their website today.

“‘Bra K’, as he is affectionately known, impressed scouts and moved to Zambia for a trial before joining Atlanta Chiefs in the United States of America… He played against greats such as Pelé who was playing for Brazilian side Santos. “

“In 1969, he turned down $1 million to remain in the States to realise his dream of forming his own club. He started Kaizer’s XI and they played their first game on 20 September 1969.”

“As a 24-year-old player, he went on to officially form Kaizer Chiefs on 7 January 1970,” added the club.

The family man 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

“Chincha Guluva” is married to Valeta Motaung. The union is blessed with five offspring: Bobby, Jessica, Kazier Junior, Kemiso and the late Thabo (died 2012). Each of Kaizer’s children work in the club’s business: Bobby (Team Manager), Jessica (Chief Marketing), Junior (CEO), and Kemiso (Media).

Administration calls 👔

The year 1985 would change Kaizer’s life and Mzansi football forever. Motaung, together with Pirates founder Dr Irvin Khoza, simply established the National Soccer League.

Another turning point came in 1996. The NSL had its commercial breakthrough when it became the Premier Soccer League with a barrage of sponsorship deals from the South African Broadcasting Corporation and Castle Lager.

“Bra Kaizer” is also the South African Football Association (SAFA) Executive Committee member.

Naturena 🏠

Known as the Kaizer Chiefs Village, the club’s base was officially opened by quite a special guest. It was none other that Nelson Mandela on 5 April 2002. The facilities include training fields, in-door gym facilities and the club’s administration offices and is one of Johannesburg’s tourist attractions.

Happy Birthday Chincha Guluva!
