Gor Mahia 1-0 Kariobangi Sharks: Substitute Afriyie the hero in Nakuru

Ghanaian Francis Afriyie scored at the death as Gor Mahia emerged 1-0 winners over Kariobangi Sharks in a Kenyan Premier League clash staged at Afraha Stadium-Nakuru on Sunday 20 October.

Gor Mahia came into the game on a back of a slow revolt from a section of the players with the coach having handed defender Joakim Oluoch the armband albeit on an interim basis.

The off-field woes didn’t seem to bother them much as Boniface Omondi pulled a good run down the right but his cross was missed by Samuel Onyango for a throwing, but much of the first exchanges was a balanced affair with Sharks keen to keep the ball every time they won possession.

A chance was to come for Gor in the 12th minute when Tobias Otieno found Yikpe in the opposition box, the Ivorian laid the ball for Omondi who in turn set up Clifton Miheso but the latter’s effort went inches wide.

Sharks Scare

Omondi was to link up with Miheso again as the game progressed following a good ball from Welling Ochieng but the Sharks keeper was up to the task. The opposition came calling in the 32nd minute after some good build-up play but Duke Abuya, who had a glorious chance, headed his effort over the bar.

Gor thought they had the lead in the 36th minute when Yikpe pulled out a bicycle kick after connecting well to a Miheso cross but his effort was ruled out for offside with the teams happy to go to the break both on a scoreless draw.

Coach Pollack was to withdraw Samuel Onyango for Dickson Ambundo in the 53rd minute as he aimed to boost his attack. The Tanzanian first contribution was to see him sidestep his marker and send in a cross across the Sharks box but there was no one to tap the ball in with Sharks introducing Daniel Sakari for Sydney Lokale.

Team Subs

Saphan Oyugi was to be withdrawn for Harrison Mwendwa with Gor introducing Francis Afriye for Yikpe as both teams looked for the needed changes to ignite their sides. Kennedy Otieno was to be the final change for Gor as he came for Boniface Omondi.

The changes for Gor was to pay at the end with Afriye scoring the winner at the death after pouncing on a loose ball that had rebounded off the post following a Kennedy shot.
