Nigerian striker Sikiru Alimi has said the team's failure to qualify for the 2020 African Nations Championship was due to ill luck.
Alimi scored a brace on Saturday as Nigeria beat Togo 2-0 in a return leg tie. However, a 4-1 loss in the first leg condemned the Eagles to a 4-3 aggregate defeat.
“It’s quite unfortunate that we couldn’t make it to CHAN 2020, though we gave our all in both games. I think we got our tactics right, but we were just unlucky,” Alimi told Completesports.com.
The Lobi Stars striker scored four goals for the Super Eagles B in 2019, but he regrets the team’s failure to secure a berth at Cameroon 2020 African Nations Championship finals – a bigger stage he would have used to aspire for an invitation to Gernot Rohr’s main team.
“Yes, it was a great feeling all through (scoring four goals), but so sad they didn’t count in the end. Scoring goals alone isn’t enough reason to be called up to the Senior National team, but if the coach sees other qualities, then why not?”
