Former Kenya Premier League Champions Mathare United lost the chance to move up the Kenya Premier League standings after drawing 0-0 against Posta Ranges on Friday afternoon.
The Slum Boys, playing at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos could not penetrate Rangers' defense despite controlling the match well.
Both teams, however, had to do with a slippery field, owing to the rains that have been pounding the area.
United came close to taking the lead just after the half-hour mark, but Clifford Alwanga's perfect cross went begging as Tyson Otieno failed to make contact.
There was little action in the first half as both sides went into the break still tied 0-0, but with Mathare on top.
Mathare felt they should have been given a penalty on the 62nd minute after Alwanga was brought down in the box, but the referee waved play on.
Chris Ochieng came close to breaking the deadlock with seven minutes to go but was unable to connect well with a sublime cross from Kevin Kimani.
With two minutes to go, Rangers came within inches of grabbing the all-important goal but Francis Nambute's shot from just inside the area sailed wide.
Both sides remain on 11 points after the draw, with Rangers ahead of United due to a superior goal difference.
Mathare will next play defending champions Gor Mahia, while Rangers will take on Chemelil Sugar.
