Wazito FC registered a 4-3 win over visiting side Sony Sugar in a Kenyan Premier League match staged at Kenyatta Stadium, Machakos on Saturday 2nd.
A hat-trick from Elvis Rupia and a late goal from Derrick Otanga ensured Melis Medo picks his first win in charge as the head coach of Wazito. Mwita John opened the scoring for Sony Sugar before Wazito made a complete comeback thanks to Rupia's brace.
In the second half, Johnstone Omurwa scored an own goal to level the score with Rupia completing his hat-trick from the spot after he was brought down in the penalty area by Humphrey Okoti. Joshua Otieno scored yet again another own goal to hand Sugar the lead but super-sub Derrick Otanga ensured Wazito pick maximum points.
Wazito FC had a brilliant start to the match, forcing Sony Sugar's goalkeeper Shaban Odhoji into early saves from Elvis Rupia, Safi Mansoor and Victor Ndinya's efforts. Another chance came when Musa Masika lost his marker, delivered a beautiful cross that had no one to connect with.
The Millers responded well, John Mwita had the chance to put Sony ahead but his strike yielded to nothing as Wazito keeper dealt with it. After half an hour, Sony took the lead through Omundi, who beat Onyango with a free header.
It took Wazito barely four minutes to draw level as Elvis Rupia beat Odhoji from a close range. Five minutes later, they had a complete turnaround and it was Rupia with another strike. Musa Masika had all the time on the wing, before squaring the ball to Rupia whose effort saw the ball kiss the back of the net.
Sony was level immediately after the restart of the second half. Wazito were penalized from a foul, 30 yards from the dangerous zone. Salmon Omollo stepped up to take the free-kick. A beautiful delivered into the box saw Wazito's defence struggle to clear and Johnstone Omurwa put the ball into his own net as he tried to clear the ball.
Joshua Otieno had the ball on the left wing before delivering a searching pass to Rupia. As the Wazito striker tried to control the ball, he was brought down by Humphrey Okoti and the referee pointed to the spot. Rupia stepped up and confidently sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to net the third goal for Wazito and complete his hat-trick in style.
Sony attacked, three versus three and the ball was passed into the pass of Kevin Omundi, who on the right-wing tried delivering a cross into the penalty area. Wazito FC keeper came out to stop the cross but had more power and the ball ended kissing the back of the net. Otieno was in the right position to clear the ball but he was a bit late as his bicycle kick clearance hit the roof of the net.
Super subs combined to put Wazito ahead. Joe Waithera had the ball on the left-wing, he picked out Derrick Otanga, who was left one on one with the keeper and made no mistake from close range.
Wazito will take on Sofapaka while Sony will be up against Mathare United at Green Stadium, Awendo on November 9th.
