Ajax earned a point after a 4-4 draw against Chelsea in an extraordinary night of football that saw the Dutch outfit reduced to nine men and concede two penalties.
With both teams having one of the best young sides in Europe currently, the game was tipped to be entertaining with the winner set to have one foot in the knock out phases.
Ajax started the game like a house on fire, going ahead in the opening two minutes when Quincy Promes whipped in a free-kick from the touchline. His inswinger went straight into the net with Abraham getting a slight touch on it to confuse Kepa.
Chelsea, however, were not behind for long as they leveled proceedings in the fourth minute after Christian Pulisic was brought down inside the box by Joel Veltman. Jorginho stepped up to convert the penalty as he held his nerve to send Andre Onana the wrong direction.
After being denied a goal in the first leg in similar fashion, Quincy Promes this time delayed his lines after Ziyech curled in a delicious cross from the right-wing. Promes crept in behind a snoozing Azpilicueta, and gently guided a header past Kepa for Ajax to regain the lead.
Ajax had a two-goal advantage in the 35th minute when Marcos Alonso gave away a needless foul just off the corner flag with Hakim Ziyech delivering a sumptuous free-kick that hit the upright before deflecting off Kepa's face and into the goal.
van de Beek goal
The Dutch champions began the second half in similar fashion as the first as Neres worked his way down the right and pulled a cut back for Ziyech, who shuttled the ball inside for van de Beek to take a touch, before slamming an unstoppable shot across Kepa and into the bottom right corner.
Chelsea halved the deficit in the 63rd minute when Pulisic made a run on the right and entered the box to roll the ball across for Abraham, who turned the ball towards the bottom left. With the ball just heading just wide, Azpilicueta was there to toe-poke it in from half a yard.
Red Cards & Jorginho goal
Ajax suffered a triple whammy in the 70th minute when Daley Blind was sent off for a second bookable offense after a foul on Tammy Abraham and Joel Veltman also got his marching orders when he handled the ball inside the box. Jorginho again stepped up to convert the penalty.
Chelsea drew level in the 74th minute when Zouma rose high and guided his header onto the crossbar. The ball pinged out, to the feet of James, just inside the box to the right. James pearled a shot into the bottom left to add to the drama in the game.
