Lionel Messi scored on his return to national football as Argentina emerged 1-0 winners over neighbors Brazil in a friendly match played in Riyadh on Friday 15 November.

Brazil started brightly and had the chance to take a sixth-minute lead when they were handed a penalty but Manchester City striker sliding his effort long way wide of the right post despite sending the goalkeeper in the wrong direction.

The miss was to prove costly for Brazil as Messi put the Argentines into the lead from the six-yard spot at the quarter-hour mark. The Barcelona superstar was to be tripped by Alex Sandro in the box, he was to step up for the kick which was saved by Allison Becker but he was too quick to bury the rebound.

Dull Game

The game didn’t live up to his billing but it was a decent hard-fought tussle in the second half with Brazil trying all they could to save their blushes but Argentina held on for the bragging rights.

It was a good test for Argentina as they prepare to take on another South America side in Uruguay in a friendly on Monday 18 November. Brazil, on the other hand, will be up against South Korea on Tuesday.

Brazil Starting XI: Alisson, Danilo, Militao, Silva, Sandro, Casemiro, Arthur, Paqueta, Jesus, Willian, Firmino
