Kenya 1-1 Togo: Harambee Stars held at home by battling Togo in AFCON qualifier

Harambee Stars missed the chance to take charge of Group G in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations qualifier, following a 1-1 draw against Togo on Monday evening at Moi Kasarani.

Stars were the better side through the match and took the lead just after the half-hour mark through Johanna Omolo, but the goal was equalized on the 64th minute from a corner kick, forcing the two sides to settle for a point each.

Stars received a scare early on as Michael Olunga had to receive treatment for an injury he suffered on the 10th minute, but was luckily allowed to continue.

Togo almost took the lead on the 15th minute after a defensive lapse from the Stars, with Lawson’s effort going slightly wide.

The first clear-cut chance for the stars fell to Johanna Omolo on the 25th minute, but his shot was deflected wide for a corner.

Omolo's vicious strike

The match seemed to be headed for a draw in the opening half, but a moment of individual brilliance in the 37th minute from Omolo gave Kenya the lead.

The playmaker found some space on the edge of the box and unleashed an unstoppable shot that found the roof of the net off the crossbar much to the delight of the home fans.

A minute later Togo came close to equalizing after a well-worked move, but goalkeeper Ian Otieno was alert to save the shot.

The Stars, perhaps with their renewed energy pushed to grab a second goal, but there was not enough time as the referee's whistle signaled the end of the first half.

Stars started the second half from where they left the first and should have grabbed a second on the 47th minute but were unlucky as a Togolese defender cleared the ball off the line.

The match became evenly balanced as both teams traded blows but with nothing meaningful going forward.

Togo equalize from a corner

The visitors, however, pulled level on the 64th minute from nothing, Ian Otieno unable to keep out an Hakim Ouro-Sama header from a corner kick.

Captain Victor Wnayama came close to scoring a second for Kenya on the 80th minute, but his header from an Eric Omondi freekick flew inches above the crossbar.

Michael Olunga then had his shot blocked following another freekick delivery into the box, with the resulting corner going to waste.

The draw means Stars move to second on the log behind surprise leaders Comoros, who early on in the day held Egypt to a 0-0 draw.

Togo are at the bottom of the group with a single point.
