Mamelodi Sundowns star Gaston Sirino scored the winner before getting a red card in today’s Telkom Knockout semi-final game against Golden Arrows.
Coach Pitso Mosimane started with Andile Jali in midfield while Sphelele Mkhulise also had a run in attack.
Sundowns opened the scoring on 11 minute through captain Hlompo Kekana. The veteran midfielder nodded in a perfect delivery that was Lyle Lakay’s free-kick.
Sirino made it 2-0 around the 34th minute after the ball fell for him in a goal-mouth scramble. The second half presented a very static start before Steve Komphela changed things up with the double introduction of Nduzuzo Sibiya and Michael Gumede for Seth Parusnath and Lindokuhle Mtshali.
Kompela’s changes paid as in the 80th minute Sibiya scored from a Knox Mutizwa cross. It was then a crisis point for Sundowns as Sirino earned a straight red-card for a nasty studs-up challenge on Trevor Mathiane.
Arrows very nearly struck the equalizer in stoppage time when Danny Phiri’s curling shot was denied by a superb Denis Onyango save.
Sundowns will now meet the winner from tomorrow’s semi-finals game between Kaizer Chiefs and Maritzburg in Nelspruit.
