Uganda and Zimbabwe joined hosts Kenya in the quarter-finals of the COPA Africa after winning all their group games of day one on Monday.
Zimbabwe had surprised Kenya 3-1 in their opening game with Luke Musiriki being the star man; the striker bagging a hat trick in the game. He was not done yet in the scoring spree as he opened the scoring proceedings in their second group game against Mozambique that ended with a 4-2 win.
Mozambique who was playing their first match restored parity in the game through Siweta Clerio a minute after resumption with the team taking a surprising lead in the 50th minute through Anise Edward. Zimbabwe though had other plans as a quick-fire double from Chiwasira Alfa regained their lead before Dylan Gumbe notched a fourth in the 66th minute to book them a place in the next round.
Another team that joined Zimbabwe in the quarters was Uganda who was the biggest winners of Day One. The team had emerged 11-2 winners over Namibia in their first game before wrapping up their group proceedings with a 4-0 win over the same opponents after Ethiopia failed to show up for their group game.
Kenya needed a response in the second game if they were to avoid the embarrassment of watching the rest of the continent square it out in their own turf and they did just that when Mozambique knocked.
Fredrick Onyango was the star man for the hosts as he bagged a first-half hat trick to put the game beyond the Mozambicans. Mozambique who had given Zimbabweans a scare in their first match gave a good account of themselves in the second half but they were undone with some poor finish.
