Kenya 1-0 Tanzania: Harambee Stars begin title defence with win

Harambee Stars opened their CECAFA title defence with a 1-0 win over Tanzania in a match played at the KCCA Grounds in Kampala-Uganda on Sunday 8 December.

The rivalry between the two sides saw both set of teams enter the stadium at a separate time with Tanzania making their way into the ground followed by Kenya.

And even before the dust could settle, Bandari FC forward Abdallah Hassan was to open the scoring proceedings in the fourth minute; the striker slotting the ball past keeper Aishi Manula after being teed up by debutant Oscar Wamalwa of Ulinzi Stars.

Tanzania had an opportunity to restore parity three minutes after the set back after they won a free-kick just at the edge of the box but Athumani Miraji effort sailed way off the target.

They came knocking again in the 18 minutes when Yassin Muzamiru shot was to be parried by keeper Samuel Odhiambo for a fruitless corner.

Apart from Wamalwa Samuel Odhiambo, the other player who was making his debut in the Kenya national team colours were keeper Anthony Wambani who plies his trade with Vasalund IF of Sweden.

Hassan had the perfect opportunity to double Kenya’s lead after finding himself in the box this after the Tanzanians had gone for the attack but his effort went wide; Wamalwa coping from the same script after being put through by David Owino minutes later.

The second half had the same script with Bakari Mwamnyeto denying Wamalwa a goal with a top-class clearance. Kimanzi was to send in Clifton Miheso and Whyvonne Isuza for Kevin Kimani and Wambani respectively as they saw off the game to lead a group that had Sudan and Zanzibar battle to a 1-1 earlier.
