Zambia U20 national team stormed the semifinals of the ongoing COSAFA Youth Championships following a 2-1 win over Malawi on Monday afternoon at Nkoloma Stadium.
Zambia came into the match looking to seal qualification to the semifinals with a draw being enough for the hosts.
Zambia started well and controlled the game but was poor in the final third. Francisco Mwepu and Jonathan Munalula were failing to capitalize on the chances that were created.
Zambia finally got their break in the 40th minute after the referee awarded a penalty following a foul on Elliot Kampukesa in the box, Golden Mafwenta stepped up and converted to put Zambia in the lead.
In the second half, Zambia continued to dominate but Malawi started coming into the game slowly. Francisco Mwepu doubled the lead in the 69th minute after being put on goal by Kampukesa.
Malawi pulled one back two minutes later as Francisco Madinga scored a beauty of a strike leaving Flobby Mashakalati with no chance. Zambia could have restored their two-goal lead but second-half substitute Golden Mashata was wasteful on two occasions, 2-1 the match finished.
