Liverpool qualified for the Champions League Round of 16 as Group E winners following a 2-0 win over FC Salzburg with goals from Naby Keita and Mohamed Salah.
With the winner takes it all the clash, the tie was off to an end to end start as both teams sought an early lead in the game.
Liverpool had their first chance in the fifth minute when Salah latched onto a ball over the top from Lovren but his right-footed finish was well saved by Stankovic.
Takumi Minamino caused all sorts of problems to the Liverpool backline and almost opened the scoring in the eighth minute when Hwang played a foxy backheel to Minamino and stabbed the ball over the out-rushing Alisson, who stood up and made a sharp one-handed save.
Liverpool came into second half guns blazing and opened the scoring in the 57th minute when Sadio Mane ran into the left-hand side of the box and chipped a dainty cross into the middle, where Keïta rose to nod into the net from 10 yards.
Salzburg were rocked by the goal and let in a second a minute later when Mohamed Salah ran on to a pass by Henderson, took it away from the keeper and then - from a way out on the right and from a preposterous angle - he clipped it into the net.
Liverpool next face Watford on Saturday, December 14 while Salzburg look to pick themselves up against Hartberg in the Austrian Bundesliga.
