For the second consecutive season, Inter Milan were relegated to the Europa League this time after a 1-2 loss against Barcelona.
Needing to equal or better Borussia Dortmund's result, Inter Milan were quickly off the blocks and almost opened the scoring in the 10th minute when Romelu Lukaku drove into the area then cut back and got ready to pull the trigger, but his shot is blocked.
Despite the brilliant start by Inter, it was Barcelona who opened the scoring in the 24th minute when Carles Perez got into a good position on the right of the area and was there to finish from close range to score in his Champions League debut.
With just a minute remaining to the half time whistle Inter drew level when Lautaro Martinez received a long ball and took a touch before holding off Jean Tobido as he laid the ball off to Lukaku who hit it with a first time shot that rippled the bottom right net.
Barcelona almost regained the lead in the 57th minute when Griezmann had a fierce shot on the left after an Alena run, but Handanovic parried the ball with Ivan Rakitic having a second bite on the cherry but his effort sailed wide off the mark.
Inter's best chance of second half came in the 64th minute when Lautaro bullied Samuel Umtiti and slid a low through pass for Lukaku, but the Belgian took a heavy touch as he tried to round Neto with the ball going out of play.
It did not take long for Ansu Fati to announce himself on the pitch as he was introduced in the 85th minute for the goal scorer Carles Perez and scored a minute later when he beat Handanovic with a low drive right into the corner from outside the box after playing a one-two with Luis Suarez.
The win tightens Barcelona's grip at the summit of F as they proceed alongside Borussia Dortmund while Inter Milan are relegated to the Europa League.
Barcelona next face high flying Real Sociedad on Saturday, December 14 while Inter Milan will look to pick themselves up against Fiorentina a day later.
