Former Manchester United forward, Wayne Rooney bagged an assist on his Derby County debut as they beat Barnsley 2-1 in the English Championship.
Rooney was making his first appearance for the Championship club since signing from DC United and was announced as the club’s new captain before kick-off.
The former Everton forward started the game in central midfield and had a hand in the opener as he whipped a free-kick into Barnsley’s box that was met by Marriott, who prodded an effort into the net.
Barnsley who are struggling in the Championship started the second half brightly and restored parity five minutes after the resumption through Elliot Simoes.
Rooney again played a key role in Derby's winner as Martyn Waghorn turned in Andre Wisdom’s driven cross from the right flank.
Despite the win, Derby remain 17th in the Championship following while Barnsley are still stuck in the relegation zone, three points off safety.
