Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns are CAF Champions League quarter-finalists after defeating USM Alger on Saturday in Pretoria.
Pitso Mosimane made three changes since Bidvest Wits midweek, bringing in the creativity of Gaston Sirino, the defensive speed of Mosa Lebusa and Anele Ngcongca’s vast experience.
Kabo Yellow waited until the 36th minute to open the score. A composed Thapelo Morena hammered home inside the box after Alger’s goalkeeper spilled Tebogo Langerman’s cross.
But the Algerians’ pressure paid just before the halftime break. Taher Benkhelifa’s super cross found an equally excellent header from Aymen Mahious to beat Denis Onyango.
The in-form Sibusiso Vilakazi had a winner to score though. The Bafana Bafana international was at the end of a speedy Sundowns counter attack to finish a quick low shot for 2-1!
Alger were gifted a glorious opportunity to level the game. The Algerians earned a penalty but Mohamed Meftah’s effort was denied by the crossbar.
Sundowns held on to advance to the 2020 CAF Champions League quarter-finals.
