DR Congo’s TP Mazembe and South Africa’s Mamelodi Sundowns booked their CAF Champions League quarterfinal slot on Saturday after wins over Primeiro de Agosto and USM Algers respectively.
Mazembe had to fight from a goal down to register a 2-1 win with Sundowns replicating the same outing.
Mazembe was stunned when Cristovao Mabululu gave Agosto the lead in what was his sixth CAF goal this season but Chico Ushindi and star forward Jackson Muleka netted within nine minutes during the second half to turn the tide.
Mazembe top Group A with 10 points, Zamalek coming second with seven with Zesco and Primeiro two each ahead of a top-of-the-table clash in Cairo on 25 January.
The same results were replicated in the tie between Etoile du Sahel and Sudan’s Al Hilal of Sudan with Petro Luanda of Angola and Wydad Casablanca match recording a 2-2 draw in Luanda.
Defending champions Esperance of Tunisia is close to a last-eight place after stretching an unbeaten Champions League run to 18 matches by beating AS Vita Club of DR Congo 2-0 in Kinshasa.
Platinum of Zimbabwe, the only club without a point going into the fourth round of group matches, held record eight-time champions Al Ahly of Egypt 1-1 in Bulawayo.
On Friday, JS Kabylie of Algeria and Raja Casablanca of Morocco drew 0-0 and Zamalek of Egypt triumphed 2-0 against Zesco United of Zambia.
