Tottenham Hotspur 2-1 Middlesbrough: Spurs through despite suffering a late scare

Tottenham Hotspur edged Middlesbrough 2-1 in an FA Cup replay clash to book a fourth-round tie against Southampton.

Mourinho came into the match under slight pressure having failed to register a win in their last four games while Boro were looking to extend their six-game unbeaten run.

Lo Celso goal

It did not take Spurs long to break the deadlock as they went ahead in the second minute when goalkeeper Mejias played the ball straight to Lo Celso as he skipped across the face of the penalty to make room for a shot and expertly fired the ball into the bottom left-hand corner.

Nmecha chance

Middlesbrough should have drawn level in the 12th minute but Gazzaniga got down quickly to smartly save from Nmecha who was unmarked in the Spurs penalty area after the Middlesbrough striker was played in by Ben Liddle to shoot for the bottom corner.

Lamela goal

Boro were meant to rue their missed chance as Erik Lamela doubled Spurs lead three minutes later when he slid the ball past Mejias into the bottom left-hand corner after a piercing run past three players into the Middlesbrough box.

Moura chance

It was Spurs chance to spurn an opportunity as Moura opted to go at it alone but pulled his shot from the edge of the penalty area a few inches wide of the left upright after mounting a quick counter-attack from their own half in the 40th minute.

Sessegnon chance

Jose Mourinho's men squandered another chance five minutes after the resumption of the second half when Ryan Sessegnon somehow fired over with the goal gaping after getting on the end of a cross whipped across the edge of the six-yard box by Tanganga.

Saville goal

With the game seemingly headed for a comfortable win for Spurs, up stepped George Saville who pulled one back for Boro after a splendid finish following a low shot hit hard and with pinpoint accuracy into the bottom left-hand corner from distance, beating Gazzaniga who was at full stretch.

Next assignments

Spurs held on for the win despite suffering the late scare as their focus shift to Watford who they face on Saturday, January 18 while Middlesbrough travel to face Fulham a day earlier.
