Talks between the Gunners and Athletico Paranaense over the future of the defensive midfielder have intensified, according to reports coming out of Brazil today.
Mikel Arteta and Arsenal were only planning to make a move for Bruno Guimarães in the summer, but they have fast-tracked plans to pursue the versatile 22-year-old in the current January window and a formal offer is expected this week.
Arsenal has allegedly been following the player's progress since 2017, even before he joined Paranaense.
According to Goal Brasil, Athletico has already rejected a bid of €20m from Benfica as they expect to make between €25m & €30m from his sale.
Arsenal’s interest in the player has been confirmed by Athletico president Mario Celso Petraglia. In an interview with the Portuguese press, he said the Gunners would only come for the player in the summer.
Guimarães would be able to obtain a work permit with no problem since he has a Spanish passport.
