Did UEFA change Team of the Year to 'fix in' Cristiano Ronaldo?

UEFA reportedly changed the formation of Team of the Year to fix Juventus and Portugal star, Cristiano Ronaldo.

According to the Daily Mail's Mike Keegan, the former Real Madrid man came fourth in the voting, with Lionel Messi, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Lewandowski all ahead of him.

This meant UEFA had to change their formation from the usual 4-3-3 to 4-2-2, in order to fix the Juventus talisman at the expense of Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante.

The European body released the star-studded Team of the Year on Wednesday evening, with Ronaldo and Lewandowski at the peak of the team while Messi and Mane supported them from the flanks.

"This is really not good. It is effectively vote-rigging. Such is Ronaldo's popularity at a senior level within the organization, alarm bells sounded when he did not make the cut and, as a result, the formation was changed. It makes you wonder what else they get up to," a source was reported saying.

However, according to a UEFA spokesman, the change in formation was only meant to 'reflect the votes of the fans'.

"The formation for this year's team of the year was chosen to reflect the votes of the fans in parallel with the players' achievements in UEFA competitions. As a result, there are five UEFA Champions League winners and four UEFA Nations League finalists [including one winner]. The formation changes on a regular basis and this year is no exception."

Ronaldo enjoyed a terrific year for both club and country, winning the Serie A title in his debut season as well scoring 21 goals. He also won the Most Valuable Player award for 2018-19.
