Wazito FC defender Dan Owino announces retirement

Kenyan Premier League side Wazito FC has confirmed that their longest-serving player Dan Ápuoyo’ Owino has retired.

Owino who has been actively involved in football for the last 14 years had spent ten of those at Wazito after serving the club in a number of positions despite predominantly a right back.

As quoted by Wazito’s website, the 33-year old said: “I have decided to call it a day.  It’s hard to say goodbye to my biggest dream (football) but I have to due to a niggling knee injury, I feel it’s time to move on to other things.

“It has been a decade at the club, I have been part of every achievement and challenge. We moved from the lower leagues to the top tier over the years. I am proud to have been part of all that. Making our debut in the Kenyan Premier League in 2018 was the highlight of my career I will always cherish that.”

Lower Leagues

Owino joined Wazito in 2010 at a time they were playing in the lower leagues and saw them rise to the Kenyan Premier League in 2018.

The defender his career with the now-defunct Kangemi United in 2006 before moving to Ushuru FC and then Wazito.

With his retirement and as a show of gratitude to his services, Wazito has promoted their former captain to the role of Team Manager with immediate effect as confirmed by the club’s CEO Dennis Gicheru.
