Manchester United has handed defender Eric Bailly a new deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until the summer of 2022.
Reports from ESPN on Friday indicated that United triggered a two-year contract option on Bailly’s contract this after they were convinced that Ashley Young was to leave the club with Marcos Rojo future uncertain.
The Ivory Coast international arrived at Old Trafford in a £30 million transfer from Villarreal in the summer of 2016 and was to be out of contract at the end of this season.
Bailly has made just 74 appearances for United since arriving from Spain due to a series of injuries that have halted his progress at the club; the defender is yet to play for United’s senior team this season after picking a knee injury sustained while playing on the summer tour of Asia in July.
He has however returned to action with United's Under-23 team this month and is in contention for a return to senior duty in the FA Cup fourth-round tie at Watford or Tranmere on January 26.
With Phill Jones struggling, Bailly has captain Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof and Axel Tuanzebe to challenge for a place at the heart of United defence.
