Newcastle 1-0 Chelsea: Hayden's late goal rubbishes effort of Lampard's men

A late goal scored by Isaac Hayden secured a 1-0 victory for Newcastle over Chelsea on Saturday night.

Newcastle endured a turbulent second half at the St James' Park, and right at the end found a way through to snatch a late winner.

Newcastle got off to a bright start and after five minutes of play, a mistake from Rudiger allowed Almiron to drive down the right-hand side. He held it up well with a bit of support, before whipping the ball into the area. Saint-Maximin rose at the back post but can only direct his header well past the far post.

Few minutes later, Willems was stretchered off with his hands on his face after injuring his left foot following a tackle with Hudson-Odoi, and on comes Ritchie in his place.

It was Ritchie's first Premier League appearance since August after his own injury problems.

Chelsea slowly but surely grew into the game and began to gain possession and in the 33rd minute, Kante flashed a Willian cross into the path of Abraham inside the area, who backheels the ball goalwards, but it smashed onto the corner of the crossbar.

The rebound fell to Hudson-Odoi, but as he went to strike, the offside flag was rightly raised against Abraham and any goal would've been disallowed.

Two minutes later, Newcastle goalkeeper Dubravka was forced to make two big saves. The first was from Kante, who was picked out by the smartest of slotted balls by James. However, he was thwarted at the near post by the goalkeeper.

Just after, it was another sumptuous cross from James into the area, but Abraham's shot went right at the goalkeeper.

Five minutes were added in the first half, no thanks to delay caused by Willems' injury, but neither side was able to change the score as the game went into half time break.

At the restart, Chelsea came out stronger, forcing Newcastle to do more of defending.

Willian and Abraham asked many questions but goalkeeper Dubravka was equal to the task, keeping all threats at bay.

Three minutes into added time, Newcastle then won their first corner kick after Chelsea had had 10 of those, it was defended away but relaunched into Chelsea's danger area to a well-position Isaac Hayden, who made no mistake as fans at St James' Park were sent into wild celebration.

It ended 1-0 to Newcastle, thanks to a final moment.
