Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has defended his team despite losing 1-0 to Newcastle on Saturday in the English Premier League.
The Blues dominated the match at Tyneside from start to finish, registering over 70% possession and 19 shots, but were undone in the 94th minute as the hosts scored in the last minute of added time to pick maximum points.
In what is becoming an all familiar thing with Lampard's team this season, their wastefulness in front of goal and lack of ability to finish off games once again undid their impressive play.
Speaking after the match, a clearly frustrated Lampard praised his team and promised they will work on the few mistakes that have become one too many.
"I can’t complain about anything from the team really. Of course, we don’t want to give headers away in our box, they’re big and that happens but other than that, we gave everything we could to try to win the game.
"You address on it on the training ground with the players but we can’t practice finishing or entering the final third any more than what we do. We have to be more clinical and the players know that,"
This was the first time Chelsea failed to score on the road since the opening day against Manchester United when they lost 4-0.
The club has heavily relied on Tammy Abraham's goals, and Lampard defended the youngster after his show against the Magpies.
"We can’t absolutely rely on Tammy Abraham. We have to have goals from across the frontline if we want to bridge the gap upwards. Tammy has been fantastic this season - it didn’t quite come off for him today but that’s football,"
Chelsea will have the chance to right their mistakes when they host London rivals Arsenal on Tuesday night.
