Absa Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns reduced Kaizer Chiefs’ league lead after beating SuperSport United 2-1 in Pretoria this afternoon.

Kabo Yellow’s ace Themba Zwane was back from suspension to replace Sphelele Mkhulise. On the opposite side, Siyabonga Nhlapo, Sipho Mbule got selected ahead of Grant Kekana and Teboho Mokoena.

The champions broke the deadlock on 32 minutes through Zwane. The goal came after Tebogo Langerman’s cross fell on Zwane’s feet for a tap-in. Gaston Sirino missed from inside the box with a shot over the bar around six minutes before half-time.

The 53rd minute would bring United’s equalizer. Andile Jali fouled Kudakwashe Mahachi inside 12 yards before captain Dean Furman stepped up to slot away the penalty.

But Sundowns had a lead to reclaim. Thapelo Morena smacked in a volley after a Hlompho Kekana cross on 65 minutes. Substitute Phakamani Mahlambi nearly made it 3-1 but Matsatsantsa goalie Ronwen Williams had a superb save to make.

The champions held on for the win and are now seven points behind Chiefs at the summit.
