Virgil van Dijk speaks on decision to rule out Firmino's goal against Manchester United

After he collided with Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea, Virgil van Dijk believes that VAR was wrong to overrule Roberto Firmino's goal.

Van Dijk had leaped for the ball with De Gea in the first half who failed to claim it and the ball broke to Brazil international Firmino who calmly finished but the goal was canceled after a VAR check.

Liverpool went on to win the game 2-0 courtesy of goals from the Dutch center-back and Mohamed Salah as they moved 16 points clear of Manchester City.

In an interview with Sky Sports after the win over United, van Dijk revealed that VAR was wrong to rule out Firmino's goal, "I didn’t jump with my hands up and it’s difficult to say, but if VAR rules it out, then you have to accept it and carry on.

"I thought it was no foul but as I said, VAR gives it, you have to accept it and those are the rules these days. We had plenty more opportunities to score goals today and make it look easy."

When asked if he was expecting VAR to rule it out, Van Dijk added: "Yeah, a little bit. Not because I thought it was a foul but just because of everything that has been going on with VAR, it’s a decision where some people give it and some don’t."
