Queens Park Rangers and Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo says Steven Gerrard has injected his game with more freedom play his best football.
After just joining before the 2018/19 season from Charlton Athletic, the powerful central midfielder already has over 30 appearances to show for.
Chatting about his relationship with the iconic midfielder, the 23-year-old revealed playing in a new ideal structure under ‘Stevie G.’
“It gives me confidence if I break the rules. I can play my natural game. It’s sometimes hard when you are in a fixed structure, so you need someone to go and do the things no one is expecting you to do, Aribo told Daily Record.
“That just gives me the confidence to say I need to stand up and do what I have to do to put in the right ball or score goals for the team.
Aribo also took the moment to reveal that things had not always been smooth sailing. “It was intense at the start and it took time obviously settling into a new club and the stature of the club and how big it is.
“So it did take some time to get used to it but I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. And I’ve been happy I’ve been able to stay in the squad and keep putting in performances, he added.
Meanwhile, Aribo will be looking to add to his six goals and seven assists when QPR take on Sheffield Wednesday in Friday’s FA Cup fourth round tie.
