Kimanzi reacts to World Cup draw; terms group a fair one

Harambee Stars head coach Francis Kimanzi has termed his team’s 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers draw as a fair one.

Stars landed fellow East African sides Rwanda and Uganda and Mali in Group E and according to Kimanzi every team has a fair chance of making it to the World Cup.

“To be sincere I think it’s a fair draw. All the teams have a fair chance of making it to the World Cup. If you look at Uganda and Mali they were both in the last edition of the African Cup of Nations so was us. Rwanda is a good side too and everyone will be out to fight,” Kimanzi told Futaa.

The tactician further noted that the fairness of the draw was depicted in the short distances they will have in games; something he feels can work for them.

Long Journeys

“Travelling for the long journeys across the continent can be tedious at times but this time we will have shorter distances which is good news for us. It gives you some good time to prepare and with no much weather change since most of the games will be played just across the borders,” Kimanzi added.

A total of 54 African nations will take part in the qualifying phase of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, but only five of them will get to represent their continent at the next edition of the tournament.

The ten group winners will progress to the third and final round, which will feature five two-legged play-off ties. The five winners of these play-offs qualify for Qatar 2022.
