Erling Håland's blistering start to his Borussia Dortmund career continued last night as their 5-1 win over Koln kept them very much in the title mix.
The Bundesliga title race is as intriguing and tough to call as any domestic competition in Europe this season, with defending champions and perennial winners Bayern Munich trailing leaders RB Leipzig by four points. Dortmund's win over Koln means that they are level on points with Bayern.
Today four of the top five are in action and, judging by the current Bundesliga standings, there's a lot riding on those fixtures.
✅ Mönchengladbach vs Mainz
Borussia Mönchengladbach lost last 2-0 last time out against Schalke. They simply have to win today against 15th-placed Mainz, a side that has lost four of their last five, to stay in the picture. The urgency for a win is made even greater by the fact that they visit current leaders RB Leipzig next weekend. It's a make or break fortnight for the talented outfit from North Rhine-Westphalia.
✅ Eintracht Frankfurt vs RB Leipzig
The form of those sides couldn't be more contrasting. Frankfurt has lost three of their last four matches while league leaders Leipzig enters this clash unbeaten in 13 matches across all competitions (W10, D3). Each of the last four games in that sequence (W3, D1) saw them score exactly three times. With Timo Werner red-hot in front of goal, they should win again and heap more pressure on Bayern.
✅ Bayern Munich vs Schalke
It's been a strange campaign for the German champions, with Hans-Dieter Flick installed as the head coach after Nico Kovac left the club. After seven consecutive Bundesliga wins, 2019/2020 is the first campaign in recent memory where they've got a real gith on their hands to win a crown they feel is rightly theirs, with inconsistency plaguing their game.
Bayern is hitting form at the right time though, with five competitive wins in a row and 18 goals in that sequence. They've also won their last two with clean sheets, showing that the reigning champions are starting to improve defensively. Schalke is unbeaten in their last four matches and can also boast two clean sheet win in their last two outings so this won't be easy. But if Bayern wants to win an eighth-straight title, this is the type of fixture where they have to grind out the three points.
