Man United skipper Maguire appeared to kick out at Michy Batshuayi after the pair of players tangled on the touchline on the first half.
VAR reviewed the incident, but Maquire escaped punishment and it was the United centre back who would double United's lead given to them by Anthony Martial just before halftime with a quarter of the game to go, after a thumping header from a Bruno Fernandes cross.
VAR that became the centre of attention again when Chelsea thought they had equalized through Kurt Zouma, only for video assistant referees to intervene and rule his effort out for a foul by Cesar Azpilicueta on Brandon Williams prior to the goal. The review system then denied the Blues again in the 76th-minute but Olivier Giroud was offside and it was objectively the correct decision.
Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to United is compounded by an early injury picked up by key midfielder N'Golo Kante.
