Old Trafford to host Euro 2021 opening match

Manchester United’s Old Trafford has been selected as the venue for the opening match of Euro 2021 by the English FA.

UEFA’s Head of Women’s Football said on Sunday: “This Euro will be ground-breaking from start to finish. To kick-off at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’ in Manchester, and to have the final at the iconic Wembley Stadium shows just how far the game has come.

“This is what women’s football deserves. To play in such stadia is what you strive for – as a player, coach, referee and fan. I am so happy for everyone who will have the opportunity to experience this.”

With interest in THE England national women team-The Lionesses at an all-time high-the FA have elected to push the barrier and use the 74,879 seater, Old Trafford, as the venue.

Having pulled a crowd of 77,768 for England’s rain-soaked friendly against Germany last November, it was time the FA went for a huge ground to accommodate their own fans.

The FA confirmed to play their group matches as St Mary’s in Southampton (32,000 capacity) and Brighton’s AMEX Stadium (30,000 capacity), the Football Association are banking on home fans heading to the south coast to cheer on their national team.
