🗿 Players to make the most appearances in Europe's top five leagues by the age of 21

AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma turned 21 last month and he's right at the top of the tree for appearances in league competition by footballers that age.

There are some pretty special names featured here, from the past and the present, so let's have a closer look.

📊 Most league games played by the age of 21

  • 🇮🇹 Gianluigi Donnarumma: 166 (AC Milan)
  • 🇫🇷 Alban Lafont: 155 (Nantes, Fiorentina, Toulouse)
  • 🇪🇸 Iker Muniain: 144 (Athletic Bilbao)
  • 🇪🇸 Cesc Fàbregas: 138 (Arsenal)
  • 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Wayne Rooney: 138 (Everton, Man United)
  • 🇧🇪 Eden Hazard: 128 (Lille)
  • 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 James Milner: 122 (Villa, Leeds, Newcastle)
  • 🇫🇷 Samir Nasri: 121 (Marseille)
  • 🇩🇪 Timo Werner: 120 (Stuttgart, RB Leipzig)
  • 🇧🇦 Miralem Pjanić: 112 (Metz, Lyon)
  • 🇦🇷 Sergio Agüero: 112 (Atlético Madrid)

Interestingly, two top young goalkeepers in the shape of Donnarumma and Frenchman Alban Lafont make up the top two places. Spanish attacking midfielder Iker Muniain was a wonderkid in the early stages of his career and although he's never hit the heights on the international stage, he remains an Athletic Bilbao legend and cult figure.

Speaking of legends, four Premier League greats are next. Cesc Fàbregas, Wayne Rooney, Eden Hazard and James Milner need no introduction as a quartet of players that have won pretty much everything that there is to win at the top level of football. Talented Frenchman Samir Nasri currently plies his trade with Anderlecht after a long, sometimes controversial career in England and Spain.

Timo Werner is near the top of most wishlists in Europe at the moment, with Jürgen Klopp a known admirer of the 23-year-old who has 21 goals in 23 Bundesliga appearances this season. Bosnian midfield maestro Miralem Pjanić is a mainstay in the centre of the park for Juventus and at 29, he's at the peak of his powers. At 31, Man City striker Sergio Agüero is still an elite-level finisher and closing fast on Andy Cole's claim as the third-most prolific goal-scorer in Premier League history.

What a wonderful list of players that have gone on to enjoy long and brilliant careers in the game.

**Sergio Agüero's EPL goal tally now stands at 180 with the City striker scoring three times since the creation of the above graphic.
