Frank Lampard has lauded Mateo Kovacic for his display in Tuesday night's Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.
The Blues lost 3-0 at home to the Bavarians, and face a daunting second leg at the Allianz Arena.
A brace from Serge Gnabry and a Robert Lewandowski goal in the second half blew the London side out of the water, having gone toe-to-toe with the visitors in the first half.
Lampard, however, bemoaned lack of experience from his side at this particular level in the competition but singled out the Croat for praise.
"There were a couple of performances in our team, mainly Kovacic, that played with a personality and a quality that makes you go ‘he could play in any team with that level’. Other than that, we need to see it wasn’t a night we showed that," he said.
The Englishman further explained his plan and tactics for the match, and why he chose to use the same system that successfully floored Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend.
"We chose a system that played well at the weekend. I knew it would work differently today, allow them a lot more possession by having the extra man at the back, but the extra man would also give us some extra security. After that it’s match-ups. That was a learning curve for us," he added.
Lampard and company will head to Allianz Arena for the return leg on the 18th of March, hoping to overturn the 3-0 deficit.
