'Robin van Persie was better than me'- Chamakh opens up about his stay at Arsenal

Former Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh has opened up about his time at Gunner and his relationship with Arsene Wenger.

The former Moroccan international joined Arsenal in 2010 but struggled to hold down a slot in the starting XI and largely spent time trying to come out Robin van Persie's shadow in the three-year spell at The Emirates.

He made 40 appearances for Arsenal netting eight times before leaving for West Ham on loan and eventually signed for Crystal Palace in 2013.

Chamakh admitted that he enjoyed his football at Arsenal when van Persie was injured.

“I took advantage of his injury during the first months. Yes, I couldn't dislodge him from the team despite my performances. It is something that I accepted, that I did not hide. I took advantage of his injury to get to enough playing times, it went really well for the first six months until he returned," he said.

The former France youth international would find himself out of the team as soon van Persie recovered.

"Arsène told me that he would rest me so that he could gradually integrate Robin back into the team. Big mistake! Robin scored goal after goal, and honestly, I could not go to Arsène Wenger and ask him to give me playing time, "he added.

Chamakh says the biggest regret at Arsenal was not getting playing time but not partnering van Persie in the attack.

"Robin Van Persie was better than me, in all areas.  The only regret, perhaps, is not being able to partner him in the attack. Arsene preferred a formation that had three attackers with one striker. If he ever played twin strikers with Robin and me, it would have been a devastating partnership."

He resigned to the fact that his future was elsewhere and that he wouldn't be able to dislodge the Dutch from the team.

"I kept quiet, I worked hard for a long time. But it was impossible for me to go knock on Arsène's door to tell him that I had to play. Robin was better than me. ”
