Former Tanzania Premier League champions Yanga on Wednesday beat second division side Gwambinia 1-0 to qualify for Azam Sports Federation Cup quarterfinals.
Haruna Niyonzima scored the lone goal of the match on stroke of halftime to stem Yanga's unfashionable run of five matches without a win, nor a loss. The Luc Eymael side has drawn their last five matches in all competitions.
The win will come as a relief for Eymael whose charges have seen a dip in confidence lately and will need to turn around their fortunes if they have to overtake Namungo in third place and Azam in second.
In another Cup match, keeper Razak Abalora was the hero as he saved a penalty kick to help Azam beat Ihefu 5-4 on post-match penalties. The second division side had held out to restrict Azam to a barren draw in regulation time.
Elsewhere, Alliance needed post-match kicks to beat JKT Tanzania 5-3 after the two teams had finished regulation time tied at 1-1. In Kagera, hosts Kagera Sugar converted to penalty kicks to beat KMC 2-0 after a barren draw at full time.
