It was a successful weekend for Egyptian and Moroccan clubs as their clubs recorded comfortable home wins in the first leg of CAF Champions League quarterfinal encounters played on Friday and Saturday.
In Cairo, Zamalek recorded a 3-1 victory over Esperance on Friday while Al Ahly beat Mamelodi Sundowns 2-0 on Saturday. In Morocco, Raja Casablanca stopped TP Mazembe 2-0 on Friday as Wydad Casablanca dismissed Etoile du Sahel with a similar score a day later.
On Friday, Zamalek continued their dominance over Esperance as they overcome a 1-0 deficit to triumph 3-1. This was the second win by the Egyptians over the Tunisians after their Super Cup win in Doha two weeks ago with a similar scoreline.
In Casablanca, former TP Mazembe striker Ben Malango gave the Raja a first-half lead before Badr Benoun doubled the lead in the second stanza. Malango refused to celebrate his goal against his compatriots and former teammates. Raja will take the 2-0 cushion back to Lubumbashi for the return leg on Friday.
Juan Carlos Garrido returns
On Saturday, familiar foes Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns locked horns once again and it was the Egyptians who emerged victorious on this occasion. Left-back Maaloul broke the deadlock early the second half before completing his brace from the penalty spot to give the Club of The Century a two-goal advantage heading to Pretoria for the return leg.
Juan Carlos Garrido's return to the dugout coincided perfectly with a match against his former employers Etoile. Defender Mohamed Nahiri was the hero of the night as his brace ensured that the Moroccans will have a two-goal lead heading to Sousse for the return leg on Friday.
