🇬🇳 🚑 Nine footballers die in Guinea horror bus crash

Guinean football authorities on Friday confirmed that nine players from second division side Etoile de Guinee were killed in a freak bus accident on Thursday.

A further 19 people were injured with 17 believed to be in a critical situation.

The accident happened near the city of Mamou east of Conakry as the team was on their way to play in the Kankan city, 650km east of the capital. This was their first match of the league season.

The president of the Guinea Football Federation Antonio Souare says it plans to hold a day of mourning to remember those who lost their lives with all teams playing in the league wearing black armbands, with the exact date yet to be named.

The Guinean Professional Football League (LGFP) came under criticism for insisting that league matches continues as scheduled despite the crash.

This decision was justified by Mamady Diomandé, secretary-general of LGFP.

"We analyzed and we said that the best way to honour them is to play football and observe the minute of silence so that people continue to think of them," said Mamady Diomandé in remarks reported by FOOT224.

Meanwhile, CAF president Ahmad Ahmad  sent his condolences to the families of the bereaved.
“On behalf of CAF, we offer our sincere condolences to the Guinea Football Federation and the entire Guinean football family.

“You can count on our support during this difficult ordeal that you are going through. We wish you strength during these painful moments,” Acting General Secretary Abdelmounaim Bah wrote in a message to the Guinea Football Federation.
