Rwanda has officially withdrawn from the 2020 African Nations Championship set for Cameroon over coronavirus fears.
In a statement released by the Rwandan FA (Ferwafa), Amavubi will not travel to Cameroon after their government ordered that no travelling outside the country as they try to prevent the spread of the deadly virus.
“The participation of Rwandan teams or athletes in the planned international sporting events [was] cancelled until further notice. The Rwandan sports federations and associations were, therefore, requested to inform their respective international federations of the decision of the government of Rwanda to cancel its participation in the continental and international games and competitions planned until further notice due to the continuous spread of the Covid-19 ", the statement read.
As Rwanda withdraws from the tournament that is set to run from April 4 to 25, CAf is coming under increased pressure to either cancel or postponed CHAN 2020. Cameroon has reported two confirmed cases of infections.
The virus that has infected at least 162, 000 and killed at least 5,000 people has disrupted global sporting calendar with numerous leagues, tournaments and meets cancelled or postponed. You can check our live coverage of the disruption here.
