How FIFA's statement on players' contracts is set to affect Hakim Ziyech's move to Chelsea

FIFA's directive to clubs to extend players' contracts to accommodate the end of incomplete seasons means Chelsea fans will have to wait for a little longer before they see Hakim Ziyech in a blue jersey.

The Ajax star completed a £37.8million move in February and was expected to join the London club at the end of the current season.

The situation has however changed due to the coronavirus pandemic, which has hit the world leading to more than 80,000 deaths so far.

In a statement on Tuesday, the governing body directed all clubs to extend players' current contracts and move transfer windows as a result of the effects.

"Accordingly, FIFA will be flexible and will allow the relevant transfer windows to be moved so they fall between the end of the old season and the start of the new season." read part of the statement.

Adding; "it is proposed that contracts be extended until such time that the season does actually end", while deals due to come into force in the next campaign would be "delayed until the next season actually does start".

Leagues across the globe have been postponed as countries grapple with the virus's adverse effects, with return dates still unknown.
