The Algerian Ministry of Youth and Sports is considering annulling all sports competitions and tournaments, including the football league, as coronavirus pandemic sweeps across the North African nation.
Earlier in March, the government had halted all sports activities and public gathering as preventive measures against the Covid-19 outbreak. There are over 1.4 million positive Covid-19 cases and at least 83,000 deaths across the country with Algeria recording 1,400 cases and almost 200 deaths.
“After the postponement of the Tokyo Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games, we will have a meeting with various sports federations including the Algerian FA (FAF). We will discuss the possibility of voiding the season and what training and remedial measures that will be put up by individual federations," Nadir Belayat, the director-general at the ministry told APS.
If Algeria goes ahead to blank the season, it will be the second country in Africa to take such drastic action after Mauritius cancelled all their football leagues and tournaments on Tuesday.
